Hailey Bieber is getting candid about a health battle she faced quietly after becoming a mother.

The 29-year-old Rhode founder revealed in a new interview with Women’s Wear Daily that she struggled with premenstrual dysphoric disorder, better known as PMDD, after giving birth to her son Jack Blues, as first reported by Page Six.

What is PMDD?

PMDD is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome. According to the Mayo Clinic, it can trigger intense mood swings, along with feelings of sadness, anxiety, irritability and anger in the days before a period.

“After I had my son, I struggled with [PMDD] a bit, and there’s just not a lot of conversation or research around it,” Hailey told WWD.

“Less of a lonely journey”

For her, simply talking about it has made a difference. She explained that open conversations help her feel less isolated, and that relating to other women going through the same thing “makes it feel like less of a lonely journey.”

A new awareness of women’s health

The model said her own pregnancy and birth experience deepened her interest in women’s health, and left her frustrated by how little awareness there is around what women go through before, during and after childbirth. She described becoming a mum as “a really intense and special journey.”

Rhode founder and new mum

Hailey and husband Justin Bieber welcomed Jack Blues in August 2024, and the little one is now two years old. Since then, Hailey has balanced motherhood with running Rhode, the beauty brand that has become one of the most talked-about labels in the industry.

Her honesty is likely to resonate with many new mothers who have experienced hormonal and mental health changes after giving birth but felt unable to speak up about them.
