Jessica Alba has quietly removed one of her Halloween photos from Instagram after a wave of criticism over the costume she chose this year.

The costume that caused the stir

The 45-year-old actor and Honest Company founder dressed as 1990s Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan, wearing a white lace skating dress with a blood-stained bandage wrapped around one knee. Her friend Kelly Sawyer joined in as Kerrigan's former rival Tonya Harding, holding a baseball bat for the shot.

The 1994 attack it referenced

The costume referenced one of sport's most notorious scandals. In January 1994, weeks before the Lillehammer Winter Olympics, Kerrigan was struck on the knee by an attacker later identified as Shane Stant, who had been hired by Harding's ex-husband Jeff Gillooly and Shawn Eckhardt. Harding denied knowing about the plot in advance but later pleaded guilty to conspiring to hinder the prosecution.

The backlash

Many followers felt that turning a real assault into a party costume crossed a line. Comments called the look "distasteful" and "immature", with one fan writing that they "expected better" from the star. Others defended her, pointing out that the incident happened more than 30 years ago and has long been part of pop culture, including the 2017 film I, Tonya.

No comment, but the photo is gone

Alba has not commented publicly on the backlash, but the picture is no longer on her page. She is the latest in a string of stars whose Halloween looks drew heat this year, following Martha Stewart's widely criticised costume.
