Forrest Gump star Gary Sinise has spoken candidly about the long fight his son Mac waged against cancer before his death at 33 in 2024.

In a new interview with People, Sinise, 71, said Mac tried 25 different drugs over four and a half years, and that he never gave up hope the family would find a treatment that worked. Mac was diagnosed in 2018 with chordoma, a rare bone tumour that grows in the spine or at the base of the skull. By the end, he had lost his ability to move.

Sinise stepped back from acting in 2020 to be there for his family. He compared Mac’s determination to the soldier in the film 1917, saying his son kept getting back up no matter how many times he was knocked down. The family didn’t get the miracle they prayed for, he said, but they saw other miracles in the way Mac lived.

His daughters also shared memories. Ella said that even when Mac was very sick he remained a beautiful person, going to Mass, learning the harmonica and watching Cubs games with his mum, Moira. Sophie said the family surrounded him when he took his last breath, and that they still feel his presence everywhere.

At the same time, Sinise was caring for his wife Moira, who was treated for breast cancer and declared cancer-free by 2024. She has also faced spinal problems and hip replacements that left her unable to drive. Sinise called her his best friend and emotional backbone.

He says he has no regrets about putting family first, and that Mac would want them to stay strong and keep going.
