Matt Damon still winces when he thinks about the comedy that got away.
In his GQ Men of the Year cover story, the Oscar winner admitted he "talked [himself] out of" starring as John Bennett opposite Seth MacFarlane's foul-mouthed teddy bear in Ted — the 2012 hit that instead went to Mark Wahlberg and launched a franchise.
Damon, 56, does not like living with regret. But he said he still cannot quite believe he walked away from a script that made him laugh harder than anything he had read. He even took it to dinner and read passages out loud to friends.
Then the overthinking kicked in. "I just got too clever by half," he told GQ. He decided the teddy bear was probably the best part, talked himself out of the offer, and moved on.
Looking back, the miss stung for more than career reasons. Ted filmed in Damon's hometown of Boston. Taking the role would have meant roughly six months near his father, who died in 2017 at 74. "I look back and I go, 'Man, that would've been six months back [home],'" he said.
Even so, Damon is gracious about how it turned out. He believes "the right actor got the part," calling Wahlberg great and the finished film great, and saying he would not have made it any better.
Wahlberg has previously said he was wary of the pitch himself — a talking teddy bear is a hard sell — before the movie went on to gross more than $549 million worldwide, spawn Ted 2, a Peacock prequel series and more.
Elsewhere in the same interview, Damon spoke briefly and warmly about his wife Luciana Barroso's recovery after a brain aneurysm roughly two years ago, just before the 2024 Oscars where Oppenheimer won big. The couple missed the ceremony, but Barroso insisted they still go to the after-party. Damon called that choice "pretty heroic" and deeply meaningful.
For an actor who has spent decades picking prestige dramas and blockbusters with care, Ted remains the rare near-miss he keeps replaying — proof that even Bourne-level judgment calls can go sideways when you overthink the joke.
