Angelina Jolie looked relaxed and happy as she headed out in Los Angeles on Monday night, just hours after news broke that her daughter Vivienne has officially removed “Pitt” from her surname.

A night at the movies

The 51-year-old actress attended a special screening of Wild Horse Nine at the Linwood Dunn Theater. She kept her look classic in a crisp white shirt, a black jacket with matching trousers and black heels, and gave a quick wave to photographers on her way inside.

Jolie isn’t part of the film, which is directed by Martin McDonagh and set in Chile in 1973, shortly before the military coup that ousted President Salvador Allende. The cast includes John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell, Parker Posey and Steve Buscemi. Jolie and Malkovich have history together, having worked on the 2008 drama Changeling, which earned her an Oscar nomination.

Vivienne’s new legal name

Earlier on Monday, a Los Angeles judge approved 18-year-old Vivienne’s request to change her name from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie. Her attorney appeared remotely for the hearing.

Vivienne filed the petition on July 20, only eight days after turning 18 alongside her twin brother, Knox. In her paperwork she gave “personal” reasons for the change.

She is not the first of the siblings to make the move. Maddox, 25, Zahara, 21, and Shiloh, 20, have already legally dropped “Pitt” from their names. Knox left the surname off his high school diploma earlier this year, though there is no confirmation he has changed it legally.

Background

Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt in September 2016 after two years of marriage; the couple had been together since 2004. They were declared legally single in 2019, but the divorce wasn’t finalised until December 2024, after an eight-year legal fight.

Jolie has spoken about letting her six children grow into their own people. In a September interview with L’Officiel, she said one of the most important things to her as a mother is supporting her kids as individuals, without getting in the way of the lives they are building for themselves.
