Nicolas Cage has given fans a surprisingly candid update on his living situation: he doesn’t really have one. The 62-year-old actor says he has been living out of hotels since a massive sinkhole tore open the driveway of his Malibu beachfront home.

The Halloween Question That Started It

Cage opened up while appearing at LA Comic Con on October 31, when he was asked about his Halloween plans. “I’m currently a little bit homeless,” he told the crowd, explaining that something had happened to his house in Malibu, so he wouldn’t be getting the usual trick-or-treaters at his door.

He still made the most of the night, saying he planned to take his young daughter, August, trick-or-treating in Santa Monica, then settle in to watch Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining once she was in bed.

What Happened to the House

The sinkhole opened on September 8 outside the four-storey oceanfront property on Sea Level Drive, which Cage bought for a reported $10.5 million in 2024. It swallowed the concrete driveway leading up to his garage, broke gas and water lines, and has been linked to coastal erosion worsened by high tides and heavy rain.

The City of Malibu declared a local emergency and ordered evacuations. Officials later marked all 31 homes on the private road as unsafe, explaining that the collapse spread into the roadway and cut off access for residents, firefighters and deputies.

Fighting to Save His Home

Cage hasn’t given up on the property. City records show he moved quickly to secure permits for sandbagging to protect the house from waves, removing broken asphalt, collecting soil samples and installing shoring to stabilise the ground. There’s no word yet on when residents will be allowed back.
