Premiere Date and Where to Watch

The show returns to the world of 1880s New York high society, following the Van Rhijn and Russell families as they navigate the complicated social hierarchies of America's wealthiest era. If you're new to the show, seasons 1-3 are available in full on Max and are well worth starting from the beginning — the show rewards patience and attention to its elaborate character dynamics.

The Full Cast Returns

The core ensemble is back. Christine Baranski returns as the imperious Agnes Van Rhijn, whose acid-tongued commentary on the social climbing of the nouveau riche has been one of the show's greatest pleasures. Carrie Coon is back as Bertha Russell, arguably the show's most compelling character — a woman of ferocious ambition navigating a world designed to exclude her. Cynthia Nixon returns as Agnes's more sympathetic sister Ada Brook.

Morgan Spector continues as George Russell, the railroad magnate whose business dealings form the show's darker undertow. Denée Benton and Louisa Jacobson return as Peggy Scott and Marian Brook respectively, providing the show's more progressive perspectives on a world that is beginning, however slowly, to change.

What to Expect in Season 4

Season 3 ended with significant upheaval across both families, and Season 4 is expected to follow through on those storylines while introducing new social threats to the Van Rhijn household. Early promotional materials suggest the season will explore the changing landscape of New York's social structure as immigration, industry, and new money continue to transform the city.

Show creator Julian Fellowes, whose previous success with Downton Abbey established him as the definitive chronicler of aristocratic decline, has indicated that Season 4 will be “the most dramatically ambitious” of the run so far. Given the quality of the previous seasons, that's a promise worth taking seriously.

Why It's Worth Watching

The Gilded Age does what the best period drama always does: uses the distance of history to illuminate the present. Questions about wealth, class mobility, the treatment of women, and the tension between old hierarchies and new money are no less relevant in 2026 than they were in 1885. That the show wraps all of this in gorgeous costumes and razor-sharp dialogue is simply a bonus.
