George Clooney took the stage in New York — and, as usual, Amal Clooney made sure the arrival was just as memorable as the performance.

The couple stepped out together on Sunday, Nov. 1, at Studio Seaview in Manhattan, where George joined a one-night-only staged reading of Smear!, a new political comedy written and directed by his Good Night, and Good Luck co-star Clark Gregg. Photographers caught the pair arm in arm, and even sharing a kiss, as they walked in for the benefit evening.

George, 65, led a cast that also included Adam Scott, Betty Gilpin, Laverne Cox, Glenn Fleshler and Shane Paul McGhie. The play follows two jaded campaign operatives — who also happen to be former lovers — fighting over a North Carolina congressional seat that could tip the balance of a fiercely contested midterm race. Proceeds from the night, raised through the fundraising platform Oath, were earmarked for The States Project and The States Forum, nonprofits focused on state-level races.

Gregg has said the project came together quickly: a friend who works as a real-life political operative encouraged him to put the comedy in front of an audience, and a couple of emails to Clooney — who is currently filming In Love with Annette Bening — sealed the deal. For Clooney, it marked another return to live performance after his Tony-nominated Broadway run in Good Night, and Good Luck.

All eyes, however, were also on Amal. According to Page Six, the 48-year-old human rights barrister went suede on suede, pulling a caramel-colored Gucci trench from the label’s fall 2015 collection out of her archive. The coat, finished with rounded gold buttons, first made an appearance back in 2015, when she wore it to New York’s Public Theater with a white Chloé dress and sandals.

This time she styled it over an off-white mock-neck minidress and a pair of black pointed-toe suede boots that climbed almost to the top of her thighs. A black handbag and gold chain earrings completed the look.

The minidress-plus-statement-boots formula has become one of Amal’s signatures. She appeared to wear the same black boots for a date night with George in February 2025, paired with a gray sweater dress and matching coat. Back in 2018, she chose a beige suede pair with a canary-yellow Lanvin coat, and earlier this year she wore thigh-grazing cognac leather boots with a Stella McCartney minidress for a lunch in London’s Notting Hill.

Suede has been a recurring theme for her in 2026. In July she was spotted in a fringed vintage Thierry Mugler suede set during a boat day in Capri, and the fringe resurfaced in Venice in September, when she wore a shimmering aqua-and-silver Caroline’s Couture minidress to a celebratory dinner.

George all but predicted that moment during his Golden Lion acceptance speech at the Venice Film Festival. “We’re going to go find a fun place to have dinner, my wife and I,” he told the audience, adding that “she’s going to be wearing a very nice dress so we’ll have to be careful where we go.”

Married since 2014 and parents to 9-year-old twins Ella and Alexander, the Clooneys have mastered the art of the low-key-but-glamorous night out — and a Sunday reading in the Theater District was no exception.
